1960-1994
A documentary film released in 2010 directed by Asif Kapadia. This film won two BAFTA'S for best documentary and best editing both in 2012. The story follows Ayrton Senna and how he won three Formula One world championships for McLaren in 1988, 1990 and 1991. The way the way the documentary was ordered and edited together using only clips for the actual races or interviews allows the audience to feel more empathy with Ayrton and his audience at the time. The various home videos used are effective in showing other elements of Senna life not to do with racing so that an audience can feel personally attached to Ayrton. These home films feature his girlfriend how we only see 2 throughout the whole film. Women are hardly seen in the documentary with only interviewers and his girlfriend are present. The interview scene highlights Ayrton as a male and they he reacts with women. He often kisses the madly in love interviewer and uses his status to calm power over her and with her responding as weak at the knees with lots of childish giggles and little smiles to the camera. Therefore creating a persona for Ayrton as the ladies man and sweet talker which he once was which won the hearts of many of the female racing fan nation.

Touching the Void released in 2003 and directed by Kevin MacDonald, it follows the true story of 2 young British males who try and the climb the never completed west face mountain in Peru. The story uses actors to re-act there scary and tragic story while Joe and Simon narrate what is happening throughout. Empathy is achieved and the audience can feel many emotions while watching. Masculinity is strong representation throughout and i believe it tries to empower men. Not giving up is the message however with a strong consequence on death in this instances it allows men to try and aspire to be strong in the toughest of situations and see these men as role models. Following the story the way it is filmed using narration and acting helps its audiences truly understand the struggle these men went through.
